How does photovoice work?

Photovoice is a flexible approach that can be tailored to different needs, settings, and communities.

Everyone can participate. No special skills are needed.

Together with the participants we go through the following steps:

Training – Participants learn the basics of photography, consent, ethics, and how to tell stories with images. They feel confident to start this project.

Taking photos – With the specific theme in mind chosen for the Photovoice project, participants take photos representing their experiences, challenges, strengths, or community issues.

Discussion and reflection –  Together participants critically reflect on the meaning of their photos and the stories behind them. Together they identify themes, insights, and possibilities for change.

Create Narratives – Participants select their most significant photos and create a contextual story to accompany it.

Dissemination – Participants can chose, or not, to share their pictures and stories. Exhibitions, reports, presentations, websites, or any other dissemination tool can raise awareness, influence policy, create community bonds, foster healing or any other desired change.

Solidify impact – The ultimate goal of Photovoice is change. Change can be small or big, personal or structural. To make sure it occurs, we follow up on the voices and proposals of the participants.
